Moses had to lead the people of Israel through the desert to
the Promised Land. God ordered him to appoint 70 advisors to help him with this
formidable task. In 1737, Jacob de Wit was commissioned to do a painting of
this story by the Amsterdam city council. This was a council of 36 wise men who
acted as advisors to the four ruling mayors. The canvas covers the entire back
wall of the former council chamber and measures 5 by 13 metres – one of the
largest canvases in the Netherlands.
